Young Womens

The Young Women will be tie-dying white shirts on Sept. 22nd for their mutual activity. The young women will be wearing these shirts for their mutual activities during the month of October for stake volleyball and then again in the spring for stake softball. We are asking the girls to bring in their own white shirts for this activity. The shirts do not need to be new, any shirt that is basically white will work just fine. So if you are a mother of a young woman, please have you daughter look through her closet or pick her up a cheap white t-shirt so that she can participate in this activity. We love working with your daughters, so thank you for supporting us and helping them be prepared for this activity

Pre-School Anyone?

I am in search of a preschool or pre-k program for my 5 year old this fall. I had planned to put him in Kindersteps at Haley Elementary, but as many of you know they got rid of the program. Can any of you recommend a preschool in our area that you think is great? He is already starting to read so he needs one that is a little more advanced.

Another option is to form a "co-op" sort of preschool. We could all take turns teaching the class. We wouldn't want more than 5 or 6 kids in the class and then have class 2 or 3 times a week. We would each be teaching preschool once every two weeks. The benefit is that we wouldn't have tuition, just the time and cost of materials. I am willing to create the curriculum. I absolutely loved the program he was taught this year and we could use that. You can contact me at:leslienelson1@mac.comhome 480.844.0880cell 480.710.1514

Recipes

Thank you, Angelica, for sharing these recipes. If anyone else has any recipes they would like to share, please email them to jodilynn6264@hotmail.com.

Emeril's Strawberry Lemonade

Ingredients
2 cups water
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
1 cup fresh lemon juice
1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and halved
2 cups cold sparkling water or club soda
Ice
Mint sprigs, garnish
Whole strawberries, garnish
Directions
In a medium saucepan, bring the water and sugar to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves. Add the lemon peel and lemon juice, stir, and remove from the heat. Let cool completely, then strain into a clean pitcher.

In a blender, puree the pint of strawberries and add to the pitcher with the lemon juice. Stir well to combine and refrigerate until well chilled.

Add the sparkling water and stir well. Pour over glasses filled with ice and serve, garnished with mint and strawberries.

Cafe Rio Pork Barabcoa

Here is the recipe for the sweet roast pork. I got it from this blog: http://heidikins.com/2008/08/29/whippin-it-up-cafe-rio-pork-barbacoa-salad-with-tomatillo-dressing/
and just changed things a little to make it less spicy so my daughter would like it. Read the whole blog for a good salad suggestion and recipes for the tomatillo dressing and cilantro-lime rice, or just serve it on tacos, burritos, etc. It is awesome!

3 lb pork roast (butt, shoulder)
8-10 oz red enchilada sauce (or taco sauce)
10 oz Dr. Pepper (not diet)
1 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp salt
1 clove garlic (or 1/2 tsp powder)
3/4 c brown sugar
1/9 c chopped fresh cilantro
dash of cayenne pepper, more if you like it spicier

Put roast in crock pot and cover halfway with water. Cook on low 8-12 hours. Drain water and return roast to crock pot. Mix remaining ingredients, pour over roast, cook 4 more hours on low. Remove roast, shred, and return to sauce in crock pot, stirring well. At this point you can cook for another hour or two or serve immediately. This recipe would be great to double and freeze leftovers. When you want a quick dinner, pull it out of the freezer and cook on the stove on low for half an hour, or until warmed through.

Vacation Anyone?

My sister would like to rent out her timeshare this summer. It is for a week (7 nights), in Ventura, California and it looks out over the ocean. I've been there many times. It's really nice and very beautiful. I'm pretty sure the weeks you can choose from are between May - September. It has a small kitchen so that's convenient. She's asking $650. Let me know if you're interested and I can put you in touch with her (I can also answer any questions for you).
Thanks- Jodi Stapley

Book Club

We met for Book Club tonight and we discussed 'The Good Earth'. It was an interesting book, but probably not one of our favorites. Those who attended were: Deb, Jackie, Amanda, Heather, Michelle and Jodi. We had a lot of fun visiting and Michelle won our book drawing for next month's book club book. Next month we will be reading, 'Almost Sisters', the 1st book of the In the Company of Good Women series. We hope more will join us next month. (By the way, that's punch everyone is drinking and thank you, Deb, for providing another delicious dessert- we appreciate all you do).

Sisters, as you make appointments to go Visiting Teaching this month, I encourage you to prayerfully study the Visiting Teaching Message found in the Ensign. Please consider the needs of the sisters you visit and bear your testimony of the doctrine and message you leave with them. Visiting Teaching is a wonderful opportunity to get to know one another, develop lasting friendships, bear one another's burdens, perform acts of service, and help bring families unto Christ. I pray that each of you will feel the joy that comes through Visiting Teaching. I appreciate all that each of you do; you are such an example of love and kindness to me. Thank you for the service you render daily to those sisters in need. Jodi Stapley

Following are some excerpts from this months Visiting Teaching Message:

"The basic doctrinal purpose for the Creation of the earth is to provide for God's spirit children the continuation of the process of exaltation and eternal life....
"...Although there is simply not a more significant contribution you can make to society, to the Church, or to the eternal destiny of our Father's children than what you will do as a mother or father, motherhood and fatherhood are not the only measures of goodness or of one's acceptance before the Lord....
"Every sister in this Church who has made covenants with the Lord has a divine mandate to help save souls, to lead the women of the world, to strengthen the homes of Zion, and to build the kingdom of God." Elder M. Russell Ballard

"The Lord has blessed women with divine attributes of love, compassion, kindness, and charity. Through our monthly visits as visiting teachers, we have the power to bless each sister as we extend our arms of love and kindness and give the gifts of compassion and charity. No matter what our individual circumstances are, we all have the opportunity to edify and nurture others."
Silvia H. Allred, first counselor in the RS General Presidency
